Soulrend Occultist build needs help

I fell in love with the simple one button playstyle of Soulrend ages ago but try as I might I've never managed to tweak a build successfully.
This makes me feel I'm missing something obvious in the mechanics and need someone to smack me in the face with a wet kipper.
